VW Touareg SRS Light: Common Fixes and Repair Costs

My 2016 VW Touareg has an SRS light that suddenly came on in the instrument cluster. The airbag warning stays illuminated regardless of engine start/stop. With recent airbag recalls becoming more common, I want to ensure vehicle safety isnt compromised. Has anyone dealt with similar airbag system issues in their Touareg? Would be great to hear what the actual problem was and what repairs were needed to fix it. Looking for workshop experiences and repair costs before taking it in.

Had a similar issue with my 2014 VW Tiguan last year. As someone with some experience working on VWs, I first checked the obvious things but quickly realized the SRS light needed professional diagnosis. The airbag repair turned out to be fairly straightforward, it was a loose connection in the wiring harness under the driver seat. The crash sensor system picked up the fault and triggered the warning light. The workshop found the cable connection was defective and needed cleaning plus securing properly. Total repair cost was 95€ including diagnostic work. For safety reasons, I would not recommend trying to fix airbag system issues yourself. The SRS light indicates a fault in the vehicle safety system that should be addressed by qualified technicians. Can you share if you notice the light flickering or staying solid? Also, have you had any recent work done near the seats or center console? This could help pinpoint if its a similar wiring issue. Did you check if your vehicle is affected by any airbag recall campaigns? Best to get it checked soon, driving with airbag system faults could compromise safety in case of an accident.

Just had my 137820km service last month and wanted to update on the SRS light issue. Took it to a certified workshop and they diagnosed a faulty airbag sensor in the front passenger seat. The restraint system warning appeared after hitting a deep pothole. The technician found the sensor connector had worked loose, likely from the impact. The repair included testing the complete airbag deployment system and reconnecting the sensor properly. Total cost was 210€ including diagnostic fees. The car safety check confirmed all other airbag components are working correctly. No more warning lights since the fix. Thanks for the detailed response about the wiring harness. Will keep that in mind if the issue returns.

Thanks for the update on the SRS light repair. My Tiguan actually had a similar experience with the passenger seat sensor about 6 months after the wiring harness fix I mentioned. The crash sensor triggered after hitting a rough patch of road, which loosened the connection. The repair approach was almost identical, full diagnostic scan of the restraint system followed by sensor reconnection and testing. My repair cost was around 180€ at the time. These seat sensor issues seem fairly common in VWs of our generation after they rack up some mileage. Good call getting it checked professionally. The airbag deployment system needs to be in perfect working order for proper protection. The full vehicle safety inspection was worth the extra cost for peace of mind. One suggestion, have them check the seat sensor mounting points during your next service. Sometimes they can work loose again over time, especially if you frequently drive on rough roads. Much better to catch any issues during routine maintenance than wait for the airbag warning to reappear.

Glad I could help everyone with their experiences. Quick follow-up on my Touareg situation, the airbag sensor repair has held up perfectly after 3 months of daily driving. The restraint system is working as intended with no warning lights. The workshop also showed me where the crash sensor is located under the seat, which helps me understand why the rough road impact caused the issue. They mentioned these airbag repair jobs are fairly common on VWs with higher mileage. For anyone else facing SRS light issues, the 210€ I spent was worth every cent for the thorough vehicle safety inspection. The technician tested all airbag components and documented everything, which will be helpful for future maintenance records. Will definitely have them inspect the sensor connections during the next service. Appreciate all the shared knowledge about similar problems and repair solutions.
