VW Touareg Window Controls Dead, All Doors Affected

My power windows suddenly stopped working on all doors and my scan tool shows some error codes. The window control buttons have no response at all. Not sure if its just the window regulator motor or something else causing this. Anyone experienced similar issues? Currently driving a 2006 VW Touareg 3.2L with 124000km. Had some questionable experiences with mechanics lately, so looking for advice before taking it to a shop. Really want to avoid getting overcharged for unnecessary repairs on the window mechanism.

Had the same issue on my 2009 VW Passat 2.0T last month. When all window controls stop working simultaneously, its typically not the window regulator motors since those fail individually. The main window control module in the driver door is likely the culprit. At the shop, diagnostics revealed the central window control unit had failed. This unit manages all window regulators and communicates with other systems. The fault codes pointed to a communication error between the control module and window mechanisms. The repair involved removing the driver door panel to access and replace the main window control module. Once replaced, the system required recalibration to restore proper window function. This was not a quick fix, the entire process including programming took several hours. This is considered a moderate repair that requires specific diagnostic equipment and programming capabilities. Not every shop can handle the programming aspect, so its best to use a shop familiar with VW electrical systems. Worth noting that window regulator motors typically make grinding noises or work intermittently before failing, rather than all stopping at once. Since your symptoms match a control module issue, focusing diagnostics there first makes sense.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My Touareg had the exact same symptoms last winter. The power windows completely stopped responding, and I also suspected multiple window regulator motor failures at first. The control module replacement fixed everything, and all window functions have been working perfectly since then. Would you mind sharing what you paid for the full repair? I paid around 450€ including parts and labor, but prices might have changed. Also curious if you had any other electrical issues pop up after the window control module was replaced? The car window system has been reliable since the fix, but its good to know what to watch out for in case any related problems develop.

After getting it checked at the shop, it turned out the faulty window regulator and power window switch needed attention. The repair was straightforward and cost 200€ total. The automotive repair specialist confirmed the control module was actually fine, just needed the window mechanism components replaced. Been driving for 6 months since the fix with zero electrical issues. The window controls work perfectly now. Much cheaper than the 450€ you mentioned, likely because my issue was simpler. The door panel only needed minimal work to access the components. The shop explained that window switch problems are pretty common in these models. Getting proper diagnosis before replacement saved me from unnecessarily changing the whole control module. All power windows now operate smoothly without any of the previous symptoms.

Following their repair experience last year with my car window issues, I went ahead and got mine checked at a different mechanic. The diagnostic showed it was actually the control module like they mentioned, not the window regulator motors. Total cost came to 480€ including parts, labor and programming. More than I wanted to spend, but the repair was definitely needed. The shop had the right diagnostic tools and got everything fixed in about 4 hours. Really glad I asked here first, helped me understand what to expect and avoided getting upsold on unnecessary window mechanism repairs. The automotive repair turned out exactly as described with the control module being the core issue. All power windows work perfectly now. No electrical problems have shown up since the fix. The window track and regulators were all in good shape, so focusing on the control module was the right call. Definitely worth getting expert diagnosis rather than just guessing at the problem.
