Last service was 2 weeks ago at 138951km and they did not catch this issue during inspection. Quick update: I checked the error code, it shows P0646. I do hear clicking sounds when adjusting temperature, mainly from the passenger side area. The malfunction occurs in both manual and auto modes, making the air conditioning completely ineffective for rear passengers. The system diagnostics panel keeps flashing the error regardless of which mode I select.

Thanks for providing those additional details about your Touran. The P0646 code and clicking sounds match exactly what I experienced with my Tiguan before getting it fixed. The clicking noise from the passenger side strongly indicates issues with the air distribution flap actuator, which controls air circulation throughout the cabin. In my case, the clicking was also more noticeable on the passenger side right before the system failed completely. Since your issue occurs in both climate control modes and affects air conditioning for rear passengers, this reinforces my initial diagnosis about the flap actuator being the likely cause. The fact that it went unnoticed during your recent service is not unusual, these problems can develop quite rapidly. Before going to the workshop, you might want to check if the flap actuator connector is visibly loose or if any wiring looks damaged. In my Tiguan, I could spot the damaged wiring without removing panels. A few more questions to confirm if your situation matches mine: Does the clicking get louder when switching between floor and face vents? Have you noticed any changes in air distribution between different zones? Is the malfunction more frequent when the vehicle is hot?

Given both previous replies, I would naturally close this as with: Thanks for the detailed follow-up. Yes, the clicking is definitely loudest when switching between floor and face vents. The air distribution seems completely unusual now, sometimes the automatic climate system sends all air to the windshield regardless of settings. The rear passengers get barely any airflow at all. The malfunction happens consistently, but seems worse after the car sits in the sun. Based on your experience, I will have the workshop check the flap actuator wiring. The symptoms match perfectly, especially the air circulation issues and clicking sounds. Hopefully the HVAC repair costs will be similar to what you paid. Will book an appointment tomorrow and update once fixed.

As someone with moderate car repair experience, I encountered a similar issue with my 2014 VW Tiguan. The automatic climate control system started acting up with comparable symptoms, no cooling and error messages on the display. The flap actuator in the HVAC system was indeed the culprit. After checking the car HVAC system, the workshop discovered a loose cable connection at the actuator plug. The wiring had worked itself loose over time, causing intermittent failures in the air conditioning system. The repair involved accessing the actuator behind the dashboard, replacing the damaged connector, and securing the wiring properly. Total cost was 95€ for the repair including diagnostic time. Since the fix, the automatic climate control has worked flawlessly. For your Touran issue, could you share: The specific error code showing up? Whether you hear any clicking sounds when switching between different temperature settings? Does the problem occur with both automatic and manual climate control modes? This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the flap actuator wiring.
