VW Touran Power Steering & ABS Issues Need Urgent Fix

Looking for advice with my 2009 VW Touran diesel that started showing multiple issues simultaneously. The steering wheel vibrates noticeably, and power steering feels much heavier than normal. The ABS warning light is now constantly on, and I received a tire pressure low warning. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? The tire pressure monitoring system shows all tires are properly inflated after checking, yet the issues persist. Wondering if these symptoms point to a specific component failure or if they might be unrelated. What should I have the workshop check first? Any insights on repair costs would be helpful.

I have some experience fixing cars and encountered a similar issue with my 2011 VW Tiguan diesel last year. The combination of symptoms you describe matches exactly what I experienced. After the tire pressure sensor warning appeared, I initially just reinflated the tires but the warning kept coming back. The steering vibration and ABS light were definitely connected. The workshop discovered a faulty tire pressure monitoring sensor valve in one of the wheels. The defective valve was causing intermittent pressure loss, which triggered both the tire sensor warning and affected the ABS system. The repair cost me 280€ including parts and labor. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you provide: Current mileage of your Touran, Whether these issues appeared gradually or suddenly, If you notice the problems more during specific conditions (cold weather, after rain, etc.), Whether you recently had any tire work done The resolution might be similar to my case, but these details would help confirm if we are dealing with the same root cause. A proper diagnosis should start with checking the tire pressure monitoring system components and ABS sensors, as these systems are interconnected on VW models from that era.

Just had the regular service done 2 months ago at 84041km. I noticed these issues started appearing rather suddenly after a period of heavy rain last week. No recent tire work has been done. The symptoms seem worse during cold morning starts but improve slightly as I drive. I will have the tire pressure monitoring sensors checked first based on your experience, that seems like a logical starting point given the mix of warnings. If it is indeed just a faulty sensor causing all these issues, the repair cost you mentioned seems reasonable.

Based on your additional information about the timing and conditions, I am even more convinced we are dealing with a similar issue to what I had with my Tiguan. The rain exposure combined with cold morning symptoms strongly suggests moisture intrusion affecting the tire pressure monitoring system. In my case, water had actually corroded one of the tire sensor valve stems, leading to intermittent pressure loss that the system would detect. The wet conditions likely accelerated the corrosion process. When my tire pressure monitoring system failed, it created those exact symptoms, false low tire warnings despite proper inflation, ABS warnings, and steering issues. The timing after heavy rain matches the behavior perfectly. The fact that symptoms improve during driving supports this theory, as the system warms up and any moisture temporarily dissipates. Having just had regular service actually helps narrow things down, since many other potential issues would likely have been caught then. The workshop should focus on: Inspecting all tire pressure sensor valve stems for corrosion, Testing the pressure monitoring system signals, Checking for moisture in the ABS sensor connections The repair cost typically ranges between 250-350€ depending on how many sensors need replacement. Given your description matches my experience so closely, I would bet on finding at least one compromised sensor valve.

Thanks for that detailed explanation. The symptoms improving during driving really matches what I am experiencing. I will schedule an appointment with my workshop tomorrow and specifically ask them to inspect the tire pressure monitoring sensors and check for moisture-related issues in the ABS connections. The repair cost estimate helps set my expectations. I was worried this might be a more serious and expensive power steering or ABS module problem, so I am relieved to hear it could be resolved by replacing faulty pressure sensors. Will update once I get the diagnosis back from the workshop. Hope it turns out to be a straightforward fix like in your case since all signs point to the same root cause with the pressure monitoring system.
