VW Touran Throttle Issues Causing High Fuel Usage

My VW Touran 2015 has recently started showing signs of trouble with higher than normal fuel consumption and struggles to start. The engine throttle response feels inconsistent and I suspect a faulty control valve might be the culprit. The car runs on gasoline and until now has been reliable. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had their throttle cleaned or replaced? Interested in hearing about repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Would also like to know if there are any specific checks I should ask the workshop to perform to confirm this diagnosis.

I had a similar issue with my VW Golf 2013, also with a gasoline engine. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced, inconsistent throttle response and increased fuel consumption. After some troubleshooting, the workshop found a defective accelerator pedal module affecting the throttle body and engine idle control. They performed a thorough diagnostic scan and checked the air intake system before confirming the issue. The repair involved replacing the pedal module, which cost 205€ including labor. The control valve and throttle body are crucial components that manage air flow to the engine. When they malfunction, it often leads to the symptoms you mentioned. In my case, fixing the accelerator pedal module resolved all issues, and fuel consumption returned to normal. To help provide more specific advice for your situation, could you share: Current mileage on your Touran, Whether any warning lights are illuminated, If the engine idle is rough or unstable, Whether the issue occurs more frequently when the engine is cold or warm, Any diagnostic codes if you have had them read These details would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced or if it might be something else entirely.

My Touran just had its service last month and has 114659km on the clock. The diagnostic scan showed a P0121 code, pointing to the throttle position sensor circuit. The symptoms match your experience with rough idle and inconsistent throttle response, especially when the engine is cold. The check engine light comes on intermittently, and the car throttle feels particularly sluggish during morning starts. The air intake system seems clear, but I noticed the throttle valve is quite dirty when checking through the throttle body. Based on your feedback, I will have the workshop thoroughly check both the throttle position sensor and accelerator pedal module. The symptoms do sound very similar to your case.

Thanks for those additional details. Your P0121 code and symptoms definitely align with what I experienced, though it seems your issue might be more directly related to the throttle body itself rather than just the pedal module like in my case. The dirty throttle valve you noticed is a red flag. A thorough throttle cleaning might resolve your issues, especially since throttle body contamination often causes the exact symptoms you described, poor cold starts and inconsistent throttle response. My Golf needed both the pedal module replacement and a professional throttle cleaning to fully restore proper operation. In my experience, these throttle issues tend to worsen gradually, affecting both drivability and fuel efficiency. The accumulated dirt in the throttle body disrupts the proper air-fuel mixture, leading to the rough idle you mentioned. Given your mileage and the visible dirt buildup, I would recommend: 1. Complete throttle body cleaning 2. Testing the throttle position sensor 3. Checking the control valve operation 4. Verifying the accelerator pedal module signals The total cost for my complete repair, including the throttle cleaning and component replacements, came to around 350€. The improvement in fuel consumption alone made it worthwhile.

Thanks for the detailed response. After discussing this with my mechanic today, we decided to proceed with a complete throttle body cleaning and diagnostic check of the throttle position sensor. You were right about the dirt buildup being a major factor. The workshop quoted 280€ for the complete service, including cleaning and testing all related components. They will also check the accelerator pedal module just to be thorough, given our similar symptoms. The rough engine idle during cold starts really matches what you described with your Golf. I feel more confident now about the repair direction, especially since your fuel efficiency improved after fixing these issues. Will update once the work is completed, but it seems we identified the right problem. The inconsistent throttle response and high fuel consumption should hopefully be resolved once they clean and test everything. Good to know the repair cost is in line with what you paid. Maintaining proper engine throttle operation is clearly worth the investment for optimal performance and efficiency.
