VW Transporter Air Suspension Failure and Repair Tips

Just had my latest service at 38775km when they noticed the air suspension issue. The pneumatic suspension control module ended up being completely shot and the workshop confirmed multiple air leaks. Based on their inspection, both the front shock absorbers were leaking and needed replacement. Fully agree about getting it diagnosed properly, dealing with ride height problems is not something to take chances with. We should stay in touch about repair solutions.

Good to hear you got a proper diagnosis. Your situation sounds nearly identical to what I experienced with my VW Caravelle. When my pneumatic suspension control module failed, it also coincided with leaking shock absorbers. The combination of these issues definitely creates those dangerous ride height fluctuations you mentioned. After my bellows valve replacement didnt fully resolve the issue, I learned that air suspension problems often cascade, one failing component stresses others in the system. My repair ended up including: New suspension control module (850€), Front shock absorbers (420€ per side), System pressure test and recalibration The total came to around 1900€ including labor, but it completely restored proper ride height control and eliminated all air leaks. The suspension failure symptoms disappeared immediately after the repair. While expensive, addressing both the electronic and mechanical components was necessary for a lasting fix. Keep monitoring the system pressure after repairs, sudden drops can indicate remaining leaks that need attention. Has the workshop provided an estimate for the full repair in your case? The costs tend to be similar across these models when multiple suspension components need replacement.

Thanks for your feedback about the service findings. Hearing about your experience really helps put things in perspective. The workshop quoted me 1850€ total for replacing the pneumatic suspension control module, both front shock absorbers, and fixing those air leaks they found. Pretty close to what you paid, which makes me feel better about the estimate. The suspension system issues are definitely not something to ignore. After hearing how comprehensively they fixed your ride height problems, I think I will go ahead with the full repair package they suggested. Good to know the air leaks and control issues cleared up right after your repair. I will keep monitoring for any pressure drops once its fixed, as you suggested. Let me update the forum once the work is completed. Always helpful to share real repair experiences with these air suspension problems, since they seem fairly common on these models.

Having dealt with a similar issue on my 2004 VW Caravelle, I can share some experience about air suspension problems. I have moderate experience with suspension systems, mainly through dealing with this exact issue. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, uneven ride height and that distinctive air leak noise that typically indicates a failing bellows valve. In my case, the air suspension failure was causing the vehicle to sag on one side, making it unsafe to drive. The repair involved replacing the faulty bellows valve and checking the entire air suspension system for additional leaks. My total repair cost was 590€, which included parts and labor. The workshop kept the vehicle for 2 days to ensure all components were properly tested after the repair. Before offering more specific advice, could you provide: Which side of the vehicle is affected? Are you noticing any specific timing with the air leaks (morning, after parking)? Have you checked if the shock absorbers show any signs of oil leaks? What error codes are showing on your dashboard? These details would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced with my shock absorber and air suspension system. Getting the right diagnosis is crucial, as these systems can be complex and interconnected.
