VW Transporter Audio Dead: Head Unit Mystery Solved

Thanks for looking into this. Since my last service at 102827km, I actually noticed the Bluetooth problem started with intermittent connectivity before the complete failure. The display shows absolutely nothing, no backlight, no clicks from buttons, and steering wheel controls are completely dead too. Pretty much matches your experience exactly. The head unit is the standard RCD 310 that came with the vehicle. Based on what you described about repair costs, Im wondering if it makes sense to just upgrade to a modern unit instead of fixing the original. Has anyone done this successfully while keeping the steering wheel controls functional?

Thanks for those additional details, and yes, the symptoms you describe are identical to what I experienced. After my 725€ repair on the original unit, I actually wish I had gone the aftermarket route instead. The faulty wiring wasnt the culprit in either of our cases, its a common main board failure in these RCD 310 units. The Bluetooth problem followed by total system death is a classic sign. Installing a modern head unit is definitely worth considering. After helping a friend upgrade his T5, I can confirm the steering wheel controls can work perfectly with the right adapter harness. Most quality aftermarket units offer better audio quality, improved Bluetooth connectivity, and modern features like smartphone integration. Key points if you go aftermarket: Budget around 450-600€ for a good quality unit, Get a proper steering wheel control interface (80-120€), Have the volume control properly calibrated during install, Ensure the new unit has good phone connectivity specs Would you like specific model recommendations that are proven to work well in the T5 platform?

Based on those answers, yes please, that would be really helpful to get model recommendations. Had no idea the steering wheel controls could be retained with the right harness. My phone connectivity needs are pretty basic, just calls and audio streaming would be fine. If I can get a modern head unit with better features for less than fixing the old one, that seems like the smarter path. The car speakers are all original and working fine, so mainly need guidance on compatible units and what to watch for during installation. Especially interested in units that have good dashboard controls integration and wont have the same Bluetooth problems as the old system. After the complete failure of the RCD 310, I definitely want something more reliable. Would appreciate specific suggestions in that 450-600€ range you mentioned. Also, any tips on finding qualified installers who know these adapter setups would be great.

I had a very similar issue with my VW Caravelle 2012, which shares many components with your T5. Speaking from moderate experience with car audio systems, this type of sound system failure can be quite frustrating. After dealing with static noise and complete audio quality loss, my head unit also went completely dark. Initially thought it was just the volume control acting up, but turned out the display was defective. The workshop diagnosed it as a failed main board in the head unit itself, not a wiring issue. The repair involved replacing the entire head unit since individual components were not serviceable. Total cost came to 725€ including diagnostic work and programming. The car speakers and wiring harness were perfectly fine, which was good news. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Whether the display shows any signs of life at all, If you hear any clicking sounds when pressing buttons, The exact model of your head unit, Whether your steering wheel audio controls still respond, If you noticed any issues with sound quality before the complete failure This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my unit.
