VW Transporter DPF Blockage Causing Black Smoke Issues

My Transporter diesel is acting up with black smoke during acceleration and the warning light stays on. The DPF seems blocked and wont regenerate. Been reading about exhaust pressure sensor issues but my last mechanic experience wasnt great. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and know a reliable fix? Vehicle specs: 2002 VW Transporter diesel, 72259km. Vehicle emissions seem off but not sure if its sensor related or something worse in the exhaust system.

Had similar issues with my 2005 VW Touareg TDI. The exhaust back pressure sensor malfunction showed identical symptoms, black smoke, failed DPF regeneration cycles, and warning lights. Vehicle diagnostics confirmed the sensor was sending incorrect readings to the ECU, causing the DPF to operate improperly. Auto repair involved replacing both the exhaust pressure sensor and cleaning the DPF system. The sensor failure was preventing proper engine performance monitoring and causing incomplete regeneration cycles. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. Continued driving with these symptoms can lead to complete DPF blockage and potential engine damage. The exhaust system requires proper sensor function to maintain correct back pressure levels. A professional garage inspection revealed soot accumulation was worse than expected due to the faulty sensor. The repair included: Pressure sensor replacement, Full DPF cleaning, ECU reset, System calibration After fixing the sensor, the engine returned to normal operation with proper regeneration cycles and no smoke issues. Regular car maintenance helps prevent these problems, but sensor failures can occur despite good upkeep.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Touareg. Those DPF and sensor issues can be tricky. My Transporter had the same problems last year and following your suggested fix path really helped get things sorted. The exhaust system seems to be working fine now with no more black smoke or warning lights. Car maintenance has been much smoother since the repair. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what the total cost came to for your fix? Also curious if youve had any recurring issues with the exhaust pressure sensor or DPF since the repair? Always good to know what to expect with these engine performance problems, especially with older VWs.

Yes, got the exhaust back pressure sensor replaced last month and the total came to 245€ for the repair. Vehicle diagnostics confirmed it completely resolved the issue, no more black smoke or warning lights since then. Engine performance returned to normal right after fixing the faulty sensor. The DPF is now regenerating properly as the system receives correct pressure readings. Auto repair costs can vary, but this fix was straightforward once the problem was properly diagnosed. No recurring issues with either the sensor or DPF since the repair. Good preventive vehicle maintenance helps avoid these problems, but pressure sensor failures can happen on these models regardless. Regular monitoring of exhaust system performance is worth it to catch any issues early.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I finally got my Transporter fixed yesterday. The mechanic confirmed the exhaust pressure sensor was completely shot, just like you mentioned. Cost me 280€ for the full repair including parts and labor. The auto repair process went smoothly once they pinpointed the issue. They cleaned the emission control system, replaced the sensor, and reset everything. Engine performance is way better now, no more black smoke or warning lights. Was worth finding a different mechanic who actually knew about these specific exhaust system problems. The back pressure readings are normal now and the DPF is regenerating like it should. Really glad I didnt keep driving it with those symptoms. Whole repair took about 4 hours but saved me from potentially bigger engine issues down the road.
