VW Transporter Engine Light + Phone Pairing Issues

Had a similar connectivity issue with my 2007 VW Passat. The main problem turned out to be a failing ignition system component that was interfering with the electronic control unit. The symptoms matched exactly, engine light, stored error codes, and complete failure of the infotainment system to pair with devices. The root cause was traced to a deteriorating ignition coil pack that was creating electromagnetic interference. This affected both the engine management system and the communications module. The repair involved: Full diagnostic scan of the ignition system, Replacement of faulty ignition coil pack, Reset of the engine control unit, Recalibration of the communications module This was classified as a serious electrical fault that required immediate attention since it impacted multiple vehicle systems. The interference from the faulty ignition components could have eventually affected other crucial electronic systems like fuel system management and transmission control. After the repair, all pairing functions were restored and the engine management system returned to normal operation. For VW vehicles of this era, its worth having the entire ignition system checked when experiencing combined engine management and connectivity issues.

Thanks for sharing that detailed fix. The symptoms match what I am seeing with my Transporter exactly. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was? Also curious if you had any similar electrical gremlins pop up since getting it fixed. Really hoping this ignition system repair sorts out both the malfunction codes and connectivity problems for good. Starting to worry about potential drivetrain issues if I keep driving it like this.

Just wanted to follow up, the mechanic managed to completely resolve the electrical issues in my Passat. The connectivity problems were sorted out with a simple end device pairing reset that cost 45€. The faulty ignition system that was causing the malfunction has been working flawlessly since the repair. The drivetrain has remained trouble-free and I have not seen any engine light warnings in the months following the fix. This was much simpler than I initially feared, as the interference from the ignition components made it seem like a more serious electrical fault. The original pairing issues were caused by signal interference rather than any major system failures. My advice would be to get it checked soon, but try not to worry too much about major drivetrain problems. These symptoms are pretty typical of a straightforward ignition system malfunction that just needs proper diagnosis and repair.

Finally got my Transporter looked at yesterday after your advice. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the ignition system causing the electrical faults. They found two damaged coil packs that were interfering with multiple systems. Total bill came to 380€ including parts and labor. The engine light is now off and my phone pairs perfectly with the system. Such a relief it wasnt a major transmission or drivetrain issue. The vehicle runs much smoother too, guess those failing coil packs were affecting more than just the electronics. Really glad I got this sorted quickly before it could cause more problems. The mechanic mentioned these electrical faults can cascade into bigger issues if left unchecked. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with the ignition system diagnosis.
