VW Transporter Misfire: Fix Guide & Common Causes

Looking for help with my 2010 VW Transporter, the engine runs really rough and jerks during acceleration. The check engine light is on and power feels significantly reduced. Initial scan suggests cylinder misfire, but I need help pinpointing the exact issue. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? What parts needed replacement in your case, ignition coils, fuel injectors, or something else? Would appreciate hearing about repair costs and workshop experiences, especially regarding diagnostic time and parts replacement. Engine is gasoline/petrol. Thanks in advance for any insights on resolving these combustion misfire issues.

I have some experience with engine issues and had a very similar problem with my 2012 VW Caddy. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, rough running, check engine light, and reduced throttle response. After initial diagnosis, it turned out to be a faulty fuel injector causing a cylinder misfire. The workshop did a thorough diagnostic check which revealed the specific cylinder affected. They tested the spark plug and ignition coil first, but the injector was the culprit. The total repair cost was 515€, including: Diagnostic time, Injector replacement, Labor costs, System testing The repair resolved all symptoms completely, no more jerking during acceleration and the check engine light stayed off. To better assist you, could you provide: Current mileage, When the problem first started, If the check engine light flashes or stays constant, Whether the problem is worse when the engine is cold or warm, The specific error codes from the scan This information would help determine if your issue is indeed similar to what I experienced with the injector failure.

Had a similar problem at 95784km. Turned out one spark plug was completely worn and caused engine misfiring on cylinder 2. The check engine light came on during highway driving and the engine started running very rough. The spark plug and ignition coil were both replaced since the coil showed signs of deterioration when tested. Total repair cost was 290€: Parts: 180€, Labor: 110€ Throttle response improved immediately after the fix. No issues since my latest service 2 months ago. Important to note that preventive spark plug replacement according to maintenance schedule could have avoided this problem. The quick fix and reasonable cost were a relief compared to potential fuel injector issues I initially feared.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had an identical situation with my VW Transporter around the 90k mark. The rough idle and combustion misfire symptoms were exactly as you described. Like you, my check engine light triggered during highway driving. The mechanic found worn spark plugs causing misfiring in cylinder 2. The ignition coil showed similar deterioration signs during testing, so both components needed replacement. My repair costs were comparable: Parts: 195€, Labor: 105€, Total: 300€ After replacement, the engine ran smoothly again with no more jerking under acceleration. The preventive maintenance point is crucial, regular spark plug changes per the service schedule help avoid these issues and potential damage to other components. Good to hear your repair went well. These symptoms can be nerve-wracking, but often the fix is straightforward when caught early.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Just wanted to close this thread with the final resolution. The full diagnosis confirmed it was indeed just like many of you experienced, a faulty ignition coil and worn spark plug causing the combustion misfire. Final repair breakdown: New spark plugs: 85€, Ignition coil replacement: 95€, Labor and diagnostic time: 110€, Total cost: 290€ The check engine light cleared immediately after repair and the engine runs perfectly now. No more jerking during acceleration or rough idle. The fuel injectors and fuel pump were tested and showed normal operation. Most valuable lesson learned: stick to the maintenance schedule for spark plug replacement. Could have avoided this issue entirely with regular preventive maintenance. At least it was a straightforward fix and not something more serious. Appreciate all the shared experiences that helped confirm my diagnosis.
