VW Transporter stalling + smoke signals MAF sensor fault

Having some concerning symptoms with my VW Transporter lately, engine stalling at idle and higher fuel usage than normal. Check engine light also came on and there is smoke when I step on the gas. Pretty sure the mass air flow sensor is acting up. Anyone dealt with similar issues? Had some trouble with mechanics before so looking for advice on getting this fixed properly. Car details: 2022 VW Transporter, gasoline engine, 107338km on the clock.

Had similar symptoms on my 2019 VW Passat last month. The engine performance decline started gradually with rough idling and increased fuel consumption. The mass air flow sensor malfunction caused incorrect air-fuel ratio readings, leading to rich fuel mixture and visible exhaust smoke. The repair involved: Full diagnostic scan, Cleaning the air intake system, Replacing the mass air flow sensor unit, Resetting the engine management system This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention since incorrect air-fuel mixture can damage catalytic converters and oxygen sensors if left untreated. The engine stalling at idle is a classic symptom of mass air flow sensor failure. After replacement, fuel economy returned to normal and the engine ran smoothly again. Important to use OEM parts for this repair as aftermarket sensors can cause compatibility issues. The air intake system should also be inspected for any leaks or damage while doing this work. Would strongly suggest getting this checked soon to prevent additional engine damage. Most reputable shops can diagnose and fix this within a day.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the mass air flow sensor issue. I had a similar problem fixed on my Transporter about 6 months ago with the same symptoms, check engine light and poor fuel economy. The repair solved it completely and the engine runs perfectly now. Did you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair? Also curious if any other sensor failures or issues have come up since getting it fixed. My mechanic mentioned something about checking the air filter more regularly to prevent future problems.

After getting the MAF sensor replaced on my Passat, I paid 365€ for the complete repair including parts and labor. The fuel economy improved immediately and the check engine light hasnt returned since. Regular maintenance is key, I now check the air filter every service interval to prevent debris from damaging the new MAF sensor. No other sensor issues have occurred in the 6 months since the repair. The engine runs smooth and the fuel consumption stays consistent. The mechanic found the mass air flow meter was completely defective, not just dirty. A proper OEM replacement was essential for getting accurate readings. The diagnostic also confirmed no additional problems with related components. Would recommend keeping up with air filter changes as your mechanic suggested. A clogged filter can stress the MAF sensor and cause similar symptoms to return.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Just got back from the mechanic after getting my Transporter fixed. The total came to 420€ including the new mass air flow sensor, labor, and complete system cleaning. The mechanic found the old sensor was damaged beyond repair, likely from debris. They also cleaned the entire air intake system and replaced the air filter while they were at it. The engine stalling issue disappeared right away and fuel consumption is back to normal. Really glad I got this sorted quickly before it could cause more problems. Will definitely stay on top of the air filter maintenance going forward. The whole repair took about 3 hours and the check engine light is now off. Money well spent considering how smooth the engine runs now.
