VW Up Alternator & Battery Causing Multiple Power Failures

My Up is acting strange with low power issues lately. The engine barely starts, dash lights are on, and headlights keep dimming. Already got a stored error code from my scan tool. Last mechanic visit was a total mess, so feeling uncertain about going back. Car is a 2019 gasoline model with 31723km. Had anyone similar symptoms pointing to a bad alternator? Really need to know if its worth trying a different repair shop and what costs to expect for this type of repair.

Had similar issues with my 2016 Polo TSI. The symptoms match a failing charging system, weak starts, dimming lights, and dashboard warnings are classic signs of alternator problems. The repair involved replacing both the alternator and serpentine belt. The original alternator failed due to bearing wear, causing inconsistent power output to the car electronics. This explained the dimming headlights and rough starting. This is a serious repair that needs proper attention. A failing alternator can eventually lead to complete electrical system failure and leave you stranded. The starter motor might also get damaged from repeated attempts to start with insufficient power. The job requires accessing the front of the engine, removing several components, and proper testing of the charging system afterwards. A qualified shop should also check the battery condition, as alternator issues often impact battery health. My repair took one full day at the shop. Would strongly suggest finding a workshop specializing in VW electrical systems, as proper diagnosis prevents replacing wrong parts. The symptoms you describe are too similar to risk ignoring.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My VW Up had almost identical symptoms last winter, weak starts and voltage drop issues affecting all electrical systems. Had mine fixed at an independent garage after getting quotes from several places. Would be really helpful to know what you ended up paying for the full repair. Did you notice any other electrical problems appearing afterwards? The car electronics can be sensitive to charging system issues, so wondering if everything went back to normal right away. Also good point about the specialist knowledge needed. A proper diagnosis with the right testing equipment definitely makes a difference when the car wont start properly.

After getting my alternator replacement done by the specialist shop, all charging system issues were completely resolved. The final cost came to 960€ including parts and labor, which actually turned out to be reasonable given the complexity of the work. The car electronics returned to normal function immediately after the repair. No more dimming headlights, engine misfire warnings, or starting problems. The proper diagnosis made all the difference, they confirmed the generator was faulty using professional testing equipment before proceeding with the replacement. The shop also performed a full charging system check after installation to ensure everything was working correctly. The battery tested fine once it had a properly functioning alternator providing consistent power. Been running perfectly for months now with no electrical gremlins returning. Looking back, going to a shop that really understood these systems was worth it. They handled all the intricate connections and mounting points correctly, which is crucial for preventing future issues with car electronics.

I decided to get my Up fixed at a local independent garage that specializes in European cars. Called around first and got several quotes, ranging from 850€ to 1200€ for a complete alternator replacement. The shop I chose charged 890€ total, including a new serpentine belt and full system testing. The repair took about 6 hours. They confirmed the alternator was failing using their diagnostic equipment before starting the work. Really appreciated their thorough approach, they actually showed me the worn bearings in the old alternator when I picked up the car. The difference was immediate after the repair. Engine starts strong now, no more dimming headlights, and all the dashboard warning lights cleared up. Battery is holding a proper charge again. Been driving for a month with zero electrical issues. After dealing with a bad experience at my previous mechanic, finding a shop that actually knew what they were doing made all the difference. Their expertise with the charging system diagnosis saved me from replacing parts unnecessarily. Definitely worth shopping around for the right repair facility when facing alternator issues.
