VW Up Starting Failure Linked to Immobilizer Fault

My 2012 VW Up wont start properly. When trying to start, the engine either doesnt turn over at all or starts for a second before dying immediately. The check engine light is on and I suspect an immobilizer fault since my last mechanic visit. The car has 72497km on the clock. Has anyone dealt with similar anti-theft system issues on their Up? Looking for experiences before choosing a mechanic, since my last one left me with doubts. Could it be related to key programming or does it sound like something else?

Recently experienced similar symptoms with a 2015 VW Polo TSI. The immobilizer fault caused identical starting issues, engine cutting out immediately after brief start attempts. Thanks for sharing your Polo experience. Had almost the exact same symptoms with my Up last winter, the remote start would fail and engine died right after turning over. Took it to a certified shop and they confirmed the immobilizer fault through their diagnostics. The fix worked perfectly and I havent had any starting issues since. Just wondering, how much did the key programming and system reset end up costing you? Also, has everything stayed working properly since the repair?

After getting the immobilizer bypass procedure done at the certified shop, I havent experienced any security light issues or starting problems. The total cost was 45€ for reprogramming the key and resetting the car immobilizer system. The technician explained that the previous incorrect key programming was causing the ignition control module to misread the security signal. Since the fix, the remote start works flawlessly and the engine starts normally every time without cutting out. It was definitely worth getting it properly diagnosed and repaired by specialists with the right diagnostic equipment. Having a properly functioning anti-theft system is crucial, and the relatively low repair cost made it a straightforward decision.

The repair was straightforward, they reset the immobilizer and reprogrammed both my keys. Total cost came to 55€, which seemed fair considering the specialized equipment needed.
