VW Up Sunshade Repair Guide: Cost & Shop Comparison

Need advice. My electric VW Up 2015 (109000km) has issues with the sunshade. It stays completely stuck in one position and wont move at all. The onboard computer shows an error code related to this problem. Has anyone dealt with this before? Looking for experiences with repair costs and whether its worth fixing at official dealers vs independent shops.

The sunblind motor issue is quite common. Had the same problem on my VW ID.3 2018 last season. The electronic sunshade got completely stuck and showed similar error codes. The main problem typically stems from either a faulty motor unit or worn cables in the sunblind mechanism. In my case, the motor had collected debris and needed a complete replacement. The UV protection mechanism was still intact, but the electronic control unit had failed. Independent shops can handle this repair, but the car interior needs to be partially dismantled to access the sunshade system. The window visor assembly and headliner must be removed carefully to prevent damage to surrounding components. The repair requires specialized diagnostic tools to reset the error codes after installation. Parts availability can be tricky since the motor unit comes as a complete assembly. While not a critical safety issue, leaving it unfixed can lead to more extensive damage to the car sunshade track system over time. The job took about 4 hours at the workshop. Would suggest getting it fixed soon to prevent further complications with the mechanism.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Really useful info about the sun visor repair. Did you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the motor unit replacement and labor? Also wondering if the electronic sunshade has worked properly since the fix or if you noticed any other issues with the interior accessories around that area?

Just got the final bill for my sunblind repair last week. Total came to 330€, this covered both the replacement motor unit and labor costs. The sun protection system works perfectly now, no more error codes or stuck positions with the electronic sunshade. The repair went smoothly and all interior components were properly reassembled. The UV protection works like new, and the sunblind moves smoothly without any grinding noises. The mechanic also cleaned and lubricated the track system while everything was apart, which helped ensure proper operation. After three weeks of regular use, no issues have emerged with any surrounding components. The headliner and all trim pieces remain securely fitted, and the electronic controls respond instantly. The investment was worth it since a working sunshade really helps manage cabin temperature and protects the interior from sun damage. Definitely pleased with how it turned out, the car blind operates better than it did even before the problem started.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got mine fixed yesterday at a local workshop. Went with an independent mechanic who specializes in VW electronics. The total repair came to 290€, bit less than expected. They found a damaged wire in the sunshade mechanism along with some debris blocking the motor. The technician cleaned everything, replaced the wiring, and recalibrated the system. Took about 3 hours total. The electronic sunshade now moves smoothly again and the error code is gone. UV protection works perfectly and all the interior trim pieces were put back properly. No rattles or loose parts. Really glad I got this sorted, the summer heat was becoming unbearable without a working sun visor. The car feels much more comfortable now and everything works as it should.
