Warning lights, overheating and low coolant level on Peugeot 607 - cause auxiliary water pump?

Hi folks, I have a problem with my old Peugeot 607 (built 2003, diesel, 160252 KM). The warning and indicator lights (including the check engine light) come on, it overheats and the coolant level is low. My first thought is that it could be the auxiliary water pump (limited function?). Had a bad experience at the mechanic the other day, so I wanted to hear from you guys. Has anyone had similar experiences with these symptoms and what did you experience at the mechanic? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a Peugeot 607 experiencing warning lights, overheating, and low coolant levels. The initial suspicion is a malfunctioning auxiliary water pump. However, another user shares a similar experience with a different Peugeot model, where the issue was traced to a faulty cable affecting the pump control unit, not the pump itself. The suggested solution is to consider checking for electrical issues, such as faulty cables, before replacing the water pump.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, I had similar symptoms with my Peugeot 508 (built 2006, diesel). In my case, however, the problem was not the auxiliary water pump, but a defective cable on the pump/control unit. It was constantly causing failures and activating the same warning lights. It was actually quite a serious problem. So not only was the faulty cable affecting the pump control, it was also affecting other systems in my car. It was quite a task to first find the cause of the problem and then replace the cable, but in the end everything was solved. I hope this helps you a bit. It doesn't necessarily have to be your water pump, it could be something else. Good luck!

Hi, that's really interesting, I wouldn't have immediately thought of a faulty cable. Thanks for sharing your experience! Do you remember what you paid for the repair? Did another problem arise afterwards or did everything run smoothly? Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hello, of course, I still remember that. I paid €225 to repair the cable on the pump/control unit. It wasn't exactly cheap, but it was worth it. Since the visit to the workshop, my old Peugeot treasure has been running like a charm again. As for the auxiliary water pump, I have to say that was my first thought too. But it ran perfectly once the mechanic had finished his check. All the problems were actually caused by the faulty cable. I was really lucky that nothing else cropped up after that. So with a bit of luck, it'll be the same for you and your old Peugeot will be back on the road. Cheer up and good luck! Best regards!

Hi, thanks for the comprehensive answer! That sounds like a lot of money, but if it solved the problem, it was certainly worth it. I really hope that in my case it's just the faulty cable and not the auxiliary water pump. In any case, your good experience gives me a bit of courage to go to the workshop. I'll see if I can find a garage near me that can check it. Although I have a bit of a stomach ache at the thought, I hope that everything goes smoothly. Thanks again for your help and words of encouragement! Greetings back!
