Weak engine and high consumption in Seat Ibiza 2012: looking for advice

Greetings, my 2012 Seat Ibiza (petrol engine, now has 104638km on it) recently had the check engine light come on and there are some abnormalities. The engine seems to be losing power, consumes a lot of fuel and there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes. The car also starts to shake at traffic lights or when I'm idling. Could these be symptoms of rough engine running? Does anyone have any experience of this before I go back to the garage? My last experience there was really bad... Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, your symptoms remind me of a similar situation with my 2015 Seat Leon. Last time at the workshop, I had to have a full exhaust system check done because my car had the same issues. It was a serious problem because it was affecting engine performance and leading to increased fuel consumption. After the check, it turned out that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The car was also quite rough at idle. I would recommend you get this checked right away, otherwise it can only get worse. Have a safe journey!

Hello, you're welcome! I'm glad if I can help you. Well, in my case it wasn't the exhaust fumes. It was actually what you suspected at the beginning: a rough engine running. I went straight to my mechanic and he diagnosed false air due to defective or porous rubber hoses and a defective crankcase ventilation, which were responsible for the whole thing. The good news: it was fixed and the shaking has stopped since then. Unfortunately, it cost me €235. Not cheap at all, but considering how stressful it was to drive and how much fuel my car guzzled, it was definitely worth it. Nothing similar has happened since and it was definitely worth the cost.
