Thanks for the reply! I did a quick visual check for obvious corrosion, but didn't really dig in deep. Should I be looking for something specific?

A visual inspection is a good first step, however, a more thorough examination of the cable and plug connection of the component is warranted. Considering the age of the vehicle, corrosion may be present, potentially disrupting the electrical circuit required for the heater element to function correctly. I suggest you consult a trusted repair shop to get a professional opinion. Continuing to operate the vehicle with a faulty oxygen sensor can further degrade fuel efficiency. Repair should cost approximately 95€.

The symptoms you describe, namely the check engine light, the stored diagnostic trouble code regarding the oxygen sensor heater, and the increased fuel consumption, are indicative of a potential issue within the vehicle emissions control system. These sensors are critical components, responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust stream. This data allows the engine control unit to adjust the air-fuel ratio for optimal combustion efficiency and minimal vehicle emissions. Oxygen sensors typically consist of a sensing element, a heating element and the wiring. Your description suggests the heater is failing. Did you check the wiring for corrosion?
