Windstar rough engine acceleration

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2000 Ford Windstar. It's got a gasoline engine and about 140,629 km on it. Lately, the engine's been running really rough, especially when accelerating. It feels like the car is jerking. The check engine light is also on, and I scanned it and found some error codes. I've changed the air filter, but no change. Could it be the fuel pump?

I had a similar problem with my Windstar. Does it idle rough too? If so, it could be engine misfire. When the air/fuel mixture ignites incorrectly, you get a misfire. I would check the spark plugs first before suspecting something like the fuel pump. When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs?

It does idle rough sometimes, yes. What does a misfire mean exactly? Replacing the spark plugs is something I haven’t considered yet. I will check the service log to see when they were last replaced. What should I look for when inspecting the spark plugs?

A misfire happens when one or more of your cylinders aren't firing correctly or consistently. This can be due to faulty spark plugs, among other things. If you pull them out and the electrode (the tip) is worn, or they look fouled with deposits, that is the likely reason. It's best to take it to a workshop though, so they can check the exhaust system for leaks. A leak there can also cause these symptoms.

Thanks! I'll check the spark plugs, but it sounds like I should probably take it to a shop anyway. Turns out you were right! It was a leak in the exhaust system. Cost me 265€ to repair, but now it's running smooth again. Appreciate the help!
