Windstar Start Stop Problem

My 2003 Ford Windstar with a gasoline engine (123,000 km) is having start-stop issues. The engine randomly shuts off, especially when stopped, and a warning light indicates low voltage. I suspect a discharged or defective car battery. Has anyone else experienced this?

That sounds familiar! I have a Ford Windstar too. I had a similar issue a while back. The start-stop system is pretty sensitive and needs a healthy battery to work correctly. It uses the battery to restart the engine quickly. If the battery is weak, the system gets confused and acts up, like shutting off at random times. Have you tried testing your battery's voltage?

I checked the voltage; it was around 12.2V when off, which seemed a bit low. When the engine is running, the alternator charges it to 14.5V. I assumed the alternator was fine. Could the battery still be the problem even with the alternator charging correctly? How did you fix yours? Did you replace the battery, or was it something else?

Okay, 12.2V is indeed on the lower side. Even if the alternator is charging, a battery can still be faulty. The alternator just tops off the battery, but if the battery can't hold a charge, the start-stop system won't work properly. I tried charging the battery overnight, but the problem returned after a few days. I had to get a new battery. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get the battery properly tested. They have equipment that can determine if it's really failing.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'll take it to a workshop to get the battery checked professionally. I wanted to ensure I wasn't missing something obvious before buying a new battery. Your advice helped a lot; I replaced the car battery, and that fixed the issue. It cost around 290€, but at least it's running smoothly again!
