Windstar Transmission Issues

Thanks for the info! It's good to know I'm not alone. The error code was something like "P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off". So, with your Renault, did you eventually figure out what was wrong with it? What did you end up doing to fix it?

Yeah, that code definitely sounds like the lock-up clutch. In my case, it ended up being a faulty solenoid valve inside the automatic transmission. The solenoid controls the hydraulic pressure that engages the clutch. If the solenoid is faulty, it can't properly engage/disengage the clutch, and the transmission goes haywire. Honestly, I'd say you should take it to a trusted mechanic. Automatic gearboxes are complex things, and if it is the torque converter, it's a specialist job.

Thanks a lot! I took it to my local workshop, and you were spot on. The automatic transmission converter was indeed defective. They quoted me 2120€ for the repair... ouch! I'm going ahead with it though, since I need the van. Thanks again for your help!

Dude, that sounds rough. I had a similar issue with my old Renault Scenic. The symptoms were a bit different, but the garage told me it was something to do with the automatic gearbox, like the gears weren't meshing properly sometimes. Your error code really points to the lock-up clutch in the torque converter. Basically, that clutch is supposed to lock the engine and transmission together at certain speeds for better fuel economy, and if it fails, it can cause all sorts of weird shifting problems. What error code did you get?
