Windstar transmission oil temperature sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Ford Windstar is experiencing issues likely related to a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor, indicated by an engine warning light and occasional gearbox malfunctions such as slipping and grinding noises. The problem could stem from a low gearbox oil level or a defective sensor. Checking the oil level is recommended first; if it's adequate, replacing the sensor is advised, which resolved the issue in a similar case.

Thanks, I'll check the gearbox oil level immediately. If the gearbox oil level is not low, what else could it be?

If the oil level is fine, it's likely the sensor itself. Mine ended up needing a new sensor. Best to get it checked at a workshop, they can confirm it and replace it if needed. They quoted me 365€ for the work including the sensor.

Thank you so much! Your advice was invaluable. I took it to a trusted mechanic and it was indeed the transmission oil temperature sensor. The repair cost was precisely as you indicated. The shifting is now smooth and the warning lights are gone. I'm grateful for your insights!

I had similar problems with my Windstar. Have you checked the gearbox oil level? A low oil level can cause all sorts of weird issues with the transmission, including triggering the temperature sensor.
