What should I look for when checking the gear shifter and linkage? I'm not sure about the shift lock solenoid – what does it do and how can I test it?

Check the gear linkage for looseness, play, or damage. Make sure everything's secure and moves freely. The shift lock solenoid stops you from shifting out of Park unless you hit the brake. You should hear a click when you press the brake in Park. If it doesn't engage or disengage right, it could be the problem. Given the symptoms, get the control unit checked by a workshop. A bad one can cause all of this, and 1000€ sounds right for that repair.

Thanks, I'll check the linkage and solenoid. But it sounds complicated, so I'll probably take it to a shop. Appreciate the help!

Sounds like a control unit issue, especially for an older car. But check the gear shifter and linkage first. If it's misaligned, it can stop the engine from starting in Park or Neutral. Also, check the shift lock solenoid. If those are okay, then yeah, the control unit is likely the problem.
