Worrying symptoms in a 2009 diesel Toyota Corolla: black smoke, long starting, failed DPF regeneration and defective glow control unit?

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my 2009 diesel Toyota Corolla, which already has almost 62,451 kilometers on the clock. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the starting time is longer in cold weather, DPF regeneration fails and the car won't start at all. To make matters worse, the preheating light won't go out and the car vibrates when idling. I suspect that the glow control unit may be faulty. Has anyone had similar symptoms and what experiences have you had with repairs at the garage? Would be really grateful for any help.

Summary of the thread

A 2009 diesel Toyota Corolla is experiencing black smoke during acceleration, long starting times in cold weather, failed DPF regeneration, and a persistent preheating light, along with vibrations when idling. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the glow control unit, though a similar case with a 2012 Toyota Avensis was resolved by replacing a faulty ECU. Repairing the ECU resolved similar issues, leading to smooth vehicle operation thereafter.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, had a similar problem with my 2012 diesel Toyota Avensis. Black smoke, long starting, vibrations and so on - same story. Turned out the ECU was actually faulty (seems to happen quite often). The guys in the workshop had to replace it. Wasn't necessarily an easy job, though, because the ECU is so central and the car basically won't work without it, which makes it a slightly more serious matter. So be prepared for your car to be in the workshop for at least a few days. It's definitely doable though and after that your car should be running fine again. Hope that helps you.

Hey, that sounds pretty much like your case. Thanks for the info! Do you remember how much the repair cost? And have there been any new difficulties since then or has everything gone smoothly?

Hey, glad I could help! The repair of the control unit came to 1000€, which is not exactly cheap, but since then my Toyota has been running like clockwork. I haven't had any more problems with the glow control unit failure since the ECU repair. So, despite the cost, I think it's absolutely worth it because my car has been running reliably ever since. So far everything has gone smoothly, no black smoke, no long cranking, just nothing. Hope that puts your mind at ease!

Hey, thanks for the info! 1000 euros is a lot of money, but if it solves the problems, then it's probably worth it. I'm definitely reassured to hear that everything has been running smoothly since your repair. I'll probably go to the garage next week and have it checked. Maybe I'll soon have a reliable car again. Thanks for the help!
