WRV Idle Air Control Valve Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2018 Honda WRV with a gasoline engine. It's got about 240,672 km on it. The check engine light keeps coming on, and when I scanned it, it showed an error related to the idle air control valve. The engine also stalls sometimes when I'm idling, which is pretty annoying. I've been reading online, and it seems like a heavily contaminated intake could be the cause. Has anyone else experienced this, and does my deduction sound plausible?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Honda WRV owner experienced issues with the check engine light and engine stalling, suspecting the idle air control valve due to a heavily contaminated intake. Another person suggested checking the throttle body for buildup, which could cause similar idle issues. The owner eventually took the car to a mechanic, who confirmed the problem was indeed the idle air control valve and a contaminated intake, resolving the issue by replacing the valve and cleaning the intake.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar happen with my WRV. The symptoms sound familiar. Did you check the throttle body for buildup? That can cause idle issues and trigger the check engine light. It might be worth a look before you start replacing parts. The other thing that comes to mind is the air intake. Is it free of obstructions?

Thanks, that's helpful! I haven't specifically checked the throttle body, but I did a quick visual inspection of the air intake, and it seemed okay at first glance. Where exactly should I be looking for buildup on the throttle body, and is it something I can clean myself, or should I take it to a mechanic?

Honestly, if you're not super comfortable with it, I'd say take it to a workshop. The throttle body is easy enough to access, but you need to be careful with the sensors. For me, it was indeed the throttle body. In the end, I went to a trusted shop. They told me it was the idle air control valve and the intake was heavily contaminated. They cleaned everything out and replaced the valve and it solved the issue for me. The diagnosis can be tricky.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I appreciate you sharing your experience. I took it to my mechanic, and they confirmed it was indeed the idle air control valve due to a heavily contaminated intake, just as you and I suspected. They replaced the valve and cleaned the intake for 425€. Car runs great now.
