Hey, thanks for sharing your experience, sounds exactly like what I'm going through! Just went ahead and booked an appointment to get mine checked. Can't remember if you mentioned how much the repair set you back? Also curious if you've had any other transmission problems since getting it fixed? I'm trying to budget for this and hoping it's a one-and-done deal.

Hey, good to hear back from you! Just to update you, after I got the TCU replaced on my X4, it's been running smooth as butter. The whole repair came to 1000 € for the affected control unit, including labor and programming. Not exactly pocket change, but way better than having to replace the entire transmission! Since the fix, I haven't had a single transmission issue, no more jerky shifts, no limp mode, and the paddle shifters work perfectly again. It's like having a new car, honestly. The shop did a great job, and it turned out to be exactly what the car needed. Looks like you're dealing with the same problem I had, so hopefully, this gives you a good idea of what to expect cost-wise. Trust me, getting it sorted sooner rather than later is definitely the way to go! Let me know how your appointment goes. Fingers crossed it's the same straightforward fix for you too!

Just got back from the mechanic, what a relief! You were spot on about everything. They diagnosed the same TCU issue and quoted me about the same price range. The mechanic seemed really knowledgeable and explained everything clearly, which was refreshing after my last experience. They're ordering the part now and I'm scheduled to bring it back in next week for the repair. The whole process was way less stressful than I expected, thanks to your detailed feedback. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer, was getting pretty nervous every time I had to drive somewhere! I'll make sure to update the thread once everything's fixed up, but wanted to say thanks again for helping me figure this out. It's good to know I won't have to sell a kidney to get my car running properly again!

I had nearly identical issues with my 2017 BMW X4 last year. Started with unresponsive paddle shifters, then rough shifting, and eventually limp mode kicked in. Got it diagnosed, turned out the TCU (transmission control unit) was failing. The garage confirmed it with their diagnostic tools and found corrupted software and hardware faults in the control unit. It was a serious issue that required the TCU to be replaced and reprogrammed. Had to leave the car at the shop for 3 days since they needed to order and program the new unit. The transmission itself was fine, thankfully, just the control module was faulty. My advice: don't delay getting it checked. These symptoms usually don't resolve themselves and could lead to more damage if ignored. Make sure to go to a shop that specializes in BMW transmissions or the dealer since they'll have the proper diagnostic equipment and programming capabilities.
