XC40 check engine light and rough running
Summary of the thread
The 2019 Volvo XC40 was experiencing issues with the check engine light turning on, reduced engine power, and rough idling. A diagnostic tool indicated an error related to the intake air temperature sensor. A faulty intake air temperature sensor can cause these problems as it provides crucial data for proper fuel combustion. Replacing the sensor resolved the issues, as confirmed by a workshop, leading to the check engine light turning off and the engine running smoothly again.

Thanks for the quick reply! It's reassuring to know someone else has experienced something similar. The diagnostic tool specifically pointed to the intake air temperature sensor. Did your diagnostic tool also show the same error? And if so, did replacing the sensor solve all the issues?

Yes, the diagnostic tool showed the same error for me too, pointing directly to the air temperature sensor. While I'm no mechanic, based on my experience and what I've read, it's highly likely that replacing the sensor will fix your problems. However, to be 100% sure, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis. They can confirm the sensor is indeed the issue before you spend money on a replacement.

Thanks again for your help! I took your advice and brought my XC40 to a workshop. They confirmed it was indeed the intake air temperature sensor. The repair cost me 155€, but the check engine light is now off, and the engine runs smoothly again. The error is gone. Your experience really helped me to narrow down the problem!

That sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, although it was a diesel. The symptoms were almost identical – check engine light, loss of power, rough running. It turned out to be a faulty air temperature sensor. These sensors provide data to the engine control unit (ECU) – the car's brain – about the temperature of the air entering the engine. This information is crucial for proper fuel combustion. So, yes, a faulty sensor can definitely mess things up.
