XC40 Diesel Engine Smoke and Power Loss

Alright, Volvo gurus, I've got a head-scratcher. My 2020 XC40 diesel is throwing a fit at 165989 km. The check engine light's on, power's noticeably down, and it's puffing out a worrying amount of smoke when I put my foot down. I'm leaning towards a crankcase ventilation valve malfunction, anyone seen this before? It feels like it can't breathe properly, almost like when my old B230 used to choke in the winter.

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Volvo XC40 diesel is experiencing power loss, excessive smoke, and a check engine light at 165,989 km. The suspected cause is a malfunctioning crankcase ventilation valve, which can lead to improper engine breathing. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the faulty valve, suggesting this as a likely solution. Booking a workshop diagnostic is recommended to confirm the problem and ensure proper repair.

Sounds familiar! I had something similar happen on my XC40. The symptoms were nearly identical – light, power loss, the whole shebang. I remember thinking it was the turbo at first, but that was ok. Have you checked for any unusual whistling noises? How's the oil consumption?

Good shout about the whistling! I haven't noticed anything obvious, but I'll listen out on my next drive. Oil consumption seems normal, not excessively high or low. Was your issue definitely the crankcase ventilation valve, or something else entirely? Any other clues I should be looking for before I tear into it?

Yeah, in my case it turned out to be a faulty crankcase ventilation valve. I'd suggest getting it checked out by a workshop. They'll be able to diagnose it properly and confirm if that's the culprit. Cost me around 360€ to get sorted, all in.

Thanks a bunch for the insight! I appreciate the confirmation that I'm not completely barking up the wrong tree. I'll book it in with the workshop and get them to run a diagnostic. Hopefully, it's just the valve and nothing more serious. They changed the valve, cleaned all oil residue and the car runs like new. Cheers!
