XC40 EGR valve issue
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Volvo XC40 with a diesel engine is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve. The problem was confirmed by a workshop, where the EGR valve was found to be defective and subsequently repaired.

Thanks for the insight. Where exactly did you find the error code, and is there a way to check the valve yourself?

I used an OBD2 scanner to pull the code; many auto parts stores will scan it for free. You could try cleaning the EGR valve yourself, there are some tutorials online, but honestly, it's a messy job and if it's truly defective, cleaning won't fix it. It's probably best to take it to a workshop.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a local workshop, and indeed, the EGR valve was defective. The repair cost 355€. Thanks again!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar set of symptoms on my BMW 3 Series diesel. Check engine light, rough running, the works. It turned out to be a jammed EGR valve. Have you checked for any error codes? That's usually the first step.
