P0471 rings a bell. Replacing the sensor did the trick for me. I wouldn't mess with the exhaust system myself. I would go to a reputable workshop. I think you'll find the repair cost is worth the peace of mind.

Thanks so much for the help. I took it to the workshop as you suggested. The sensor was indeed defective, and they replaced it. The total cost was 245€. Everything seems to be running smoothly now!

Hey there. I have an XC40 as well, though I won't say the year. I had a similar issue a while back with the warning light and smoke. The diagnostic also pointed to the exhaust back pressure sensor. Did the diagnostic give you any specific error codes?
