XC40 fuel flap issue

Afternoon, I'm having a bother with my 2019 Volvo XC40 diesel. It's got 145677 km on the clock. The fuel flap release has stopped working. I'm getting an error stored in the memory, and I can no longer lock or unlock the fuel filler flap. As a knock-on effect, some other functions are unavailable too. I suspect it's a defective linkage, if it even has one. Has anyone else encountered this?

Summary of the thread

The 2019 Volvo XC40 diesel has a fuel flap release issue, where the flap cannot be locked or unlocked, and some other functions are unavailable. The problem is likely due to a defective electric motor that controls the locking mechanism of the fuel flap. The suggested solution is to have the motor checked and potentially replaced at a workshop, as confirmed by another owner who experienced a similar issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had something similar on my XC40. Couldn't get the fuel door open. Pretty sure the 'linkage' you're talking about is actually a little electric motor that pushes the pin in and out to lock the flap. The other function issue is probably because the car thinks the fuel door is always open and it disables some features. Did your key fob stop working too, by any chance?

Interesting, didn't realise it was an electric motor! And no, the key fob still works fine for everything else. So, was it definitely the motor then? Did you manage to fix it yourself, or was it a trip to the workshop?

Yeah, pretty sure it was the motor. I didn't fancy messing about with it myself, especially with the electrical side. Bit beyond my skillset to be honest. I booked it into the local workshop and they sorted it out pretty quickly. They confirmed it was the fuel flap motor that had failed.

Right, understood. Sounds like a trip to the workshop is on the cards then. Thanks for confirming it was likely the motor – at least I know what they're looking for. It turned out to be a defective linkage, and it costs 210€.
