Summary of the thread
The 2018 Volvo XC40 diesel experienced intermittent ignition problems, including failure to start, shutting off, and occasional rough running. Initial suspicions were on the starter motor or ignition coil, but fuses appeared fine. After further advice, a defective fuse related to the ignition system was identified as the cause. Thanks! I visually inspected the fuses in the primary fuse box, but didn't test each with a multimeter. Do you recall which specific fuse it was? Battery voltage seems normal, around 12.6 volts at rest.

Okay, 12.6V sounds solid. Honestly, I can't remember the exact fuse number - it was a while ago. It was related to the engine management system though, I'm pretty sure. I'd strongly suggest getting a proper diagnostic scan done at a trusted workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the fault much quicker than poking around in the dark. Save yourself the headache!

Took your advice and consulted a local workshop. Turns out a fuse related to the ignition system was defective. Replacement cost, including labor, was just 52€. Your insights helped me get a quick and cheap fix. Thanks again!

Wow, that sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same symptoms with my XC40. Did you check all the fuses? I mean, really double-check? Because for me, it turned out to be a silly fuse that was causing all the trouble. I was convinced it was something major, like the fuel pump or even the ECU, but nope, just a little fuse! What about the battery voltage? Is it showing any signs of weakness?
