XC40 Jerking and Hissing Noise
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Volvo XC40 diesel exhibited issues such as an intermittent check engine light, jerking during acceleration, a whistling noise turning into a loud hissing sound, increased fuel consumption, reduced power, and occasional stalling at idle. The suspected cause was a faulty boost pressure sensor, with a potentially suspect cable or plug connection. After consulting with others who experienced similar issues, it was suggested to check for boost leaks around the turbocharger or intake manifold. Ultimately, a visit to a workshop confirmed a faulty boost pressure sensor and a loose connection, which were repaired, resolving the problem.

Thanks for the quick response. I did a visual inspection of the hoses and intercooler but didn't find anything obvious. Where exactly did you find the boost leak in your case, or was it indeed the sensor?

In my case, it turned out to be a combination of a cracked hose near the intake and a faulty sensor. Honestly, given the complexity of the turbo system and the potential for further damage, I'd recommend a visit to a trusted workshop. They have the right equipment to properly diagnose and resolve the issue.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a shop and you were spot on - faulty boost pressure sensor. They replaced it and fixed a loose connection. Total cost was 95€. Runs like new now.

Interesting. I have an XC40 as well, and those symptoms sound awfully familiar. I had similar jerking and hissing, along with the engine light. Have you checked for any boost leaks around the turbocharger or intake manifold? It might be worth a look before condemning the sensor outright.
