Summary of the thread
A 2019 Volvo XC40 hybrid with 205,508 km displayed a check engine light, indicating a NOx sensor issue, and there was a noticeable smell of exhaust fumes. Interesting. Do you remember what the issue was and what was done to fix it?

Honestly, I don't remember the exact details. I just took it to the workshop and they sorted it out. It could be your sensor's cable too.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I'll take it to the workshop. Turns out it was a defective NOx sensor cable. Cost me 95€ to fix.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my XC40. Check engine light and all. I remember reading something about NOx sensors and exhaust systems then.
