XC40 Oil Pressure Warning and Engine Noise

I'm having a worrying issue with my 2013 Volvo XC40 gasoline. It has about 165k kilometers on it. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up and there's a terrible loud mechanical noise coming from the engine. I checked the oil level, and it's fine. I also tried changing the oil filter, thinking it might be clogged, but that didn't help. Could it be oil leakage, or is it something worse?

Ugh, that sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my XC40 a while back. Did you notice any difference after you changed the oil filter? When my oil pressure sensor went bad, the symptoms were pretty much the same. Maybe you should check that first, before thinking about the oil pump. Has the car had an oil change recently?

Thanks for the quick reply! No, changing the oil filter didn't make any difference at all. You mentioned the oil pressure sensor… where is that located, and is it something I could check myself, or does it need special equipment?

Honestly, based on what you're describing and the fact that the oil filter didn't help, it really does sound like oil pump failure. I wouldn't risk driving it too much. In my case, the noise was definitely the oil pump struggling. I'd strongly suggest taking it to a trusted workshop to have it diagnosed properly. It could save you from even bigger problems down the road.

Thanks so much for your advice! I suspected it might be the oil pump. I took it to the shop, and you were right – it was a defect in the oil pump. The repair cost was 755€, but at least it's fixed now. I really appreciate your help!
