XC40 Stalling and Fuel Smell
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Volvo XC40 hybrid is experiencing stalling issues and a persistent check engine light, with a noticeable gasoline smell. The problem may be linked to a leak in the fuel tank ventilation system, potentially caused by a defective activated charcoal filter. It is suggested to consult a mechanic for proper diagnosis and repair, as leak detection can be complex without specialized equipment.

Hmm, I hadn't really thought about when it happens in relation to filling up. I'll have to pay attention to that. But yeah, sometimes I do smell gasoline! What does a fuel tank ventilation leak even mean? And how would I find something like that?

Okay, the smell of gasoline makes me pretty confident it has to do with the ventilation. The system is there to manage pressure and fumes. With those symptoms, I'd bet on a defective activated charcoal filter. I had similar problems on a 2017 Polestar I used to drive. Honestly, leak detection in that area can be tricky without the right equipment. You might save yourself time and frustration by taking it to a reputable workshop.

Thanks a lot! I was really hoping it would be something simple, but you're right, I'll probably just make an appointment with a mechanic. After a bit of digging using your hints, I am pretty sure that the activated charcoal filter is faulty. Looks like the repair is going to be in the neighborhood of 275€. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

That's rough! Check engine lights are never fun. When it stalls, does it happen more when the fuel tank is full, nearly empty, or does it seem random? It sounds like it could be a leak in the fuel tank ventilation system. Have you noticed any weird smells, like strong fuel odors, especially after filling up?
