XC40 Start Stop Error
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Volvo XC40 with a gasoline engine is experiencing issues with its start-stop system at 27,500 km, resulting in an error and warning light. The problem is suspected to be related to the battery, as modern start-stop systems are sensitive to voltage drops, especially with frequent short trips that may not allow the battery to fully recharge. It is advised to have the battery checked and possibly replaced, as a weakened battery can trigger errors in the system. The issue was resolved by replacing a defective battery.

Thanks! The battery hasn't been checked recently. My trips are a mix of short commutes and longer highway runs. Could a partially discharged battery really cause the system to throw such a fit, with error messages and all? It seems a bit dramatic.

Absolutely. Modern cars are very particular with their electronics. A slightly weakened battery can trigger seemingly unrelated errors. The start-stop system places a large demand on the battery and will disable itself to protect the car from potential issues. Given the error codes, it could point to other underlying issues that a professional should examine. I'd recommend a trusted workshop, as it is still under warranty!

Thanks for the advice! I was hoping to avoid the shop, but it sounds like I don't have much choice. I’ll book it in and mention the battery and error codes. Turns out it was exactly as you guessed, the battery was defective, replacement cost me 290€.

That's tricky! Consistent errors point to something beyond a glitch. When was the last battery check? Modern start-stop systems are super sensitive to voltage drops. Also, are you doing mostly short trips? Short drives often don't give the battery enough time to recharge, which can accelerate its discharge.
