XC40 Transmission Indicator Light Issue

I'm having a nightmare with my 2020 Volvo XC40 diesel. The transmission indicator light keeps popping on, along with the check engine light. It feels like the automatic transmission is stuck in emergency mode, and it definitely doesn't shift smoothly – it's slipping and making some really nasty grinding noises when it does change gear. I've also noticed it sometimes doesn't shift at all as it should. I got a mechanic to read the error memory, and it says there's something up with the radiator oil pressure. They're saying it might be a defective cable or plug connection, but I'm worried it's something much worse. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I had a similar issue with my XC40. The symptoms sound very familiar – transmission light, rough shifting, the works. Did they mention anything about the pressure sensor or any leaks in the cooling system around the radiator?

No, they didn't mention a pressure sensor specifically. Just that the error code pointed to the radiator oil pressure being defective, and that the connections might be faulty. Why do you ask about the pressure sensor, and was the cooling system involved?

My mechanic suspected a faulty pressure sensor was giving incorrect readings, causing the transmission to act up as a safety measure. He mentioned it could also be related to coolant levels affecting the pressure. It's probably best to let a workshop deal with it. The estimated repair cost was 95€!

Thanks so much for the info! It’s reassuring to hear someone else had a similar experience and it wasn't a catastrophic failure. Turns out you were spot on. I took it to another mechanic, they checked the pressure sensor and the cable. The cable had a bad connection, they have replaced it. All in, it cost me 95€ to repair this issue. Much appreciated!
