XC60 Active Hood Fault Airbag Light

I have a 2019 Volvo XC60 with a diesel engine and about 43431 km. I'm getting an "Active hood fault" message on the computer, and the airbag warning lamp is lit. I plugged in an OBD reader and there's an error stored. I think the spring actuators were triggered. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts on what could be causing it before I take it to a workshop?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Volvo XC60 owner experienced an "Active hood fault" message and an airbag warning light, suspecting triggered spring actuators. The issue was linked to a faulty acceleration sensor in the crash detection system, possibly triggered by hitting a pothole. It was advised to seek professional help due to the system's complexity and connection to the airbag system. The problem was resolved at a workshop, confirming the defective sensor as the cause.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I've got an XC60 as well and I ran into a similar issue a while back. The "Active hood fault" message popped up along with the airbag light. Did you notice anything out of the ordinary before it happened? Maybe a hard bump or anything that could have triggered the crash detection system?

Thanks for the quick response! Now that you mention it, I did go over a rather nasty pothole a few days before the message appeared. Could that really be enough to set it off? Is there a way to check the crash detection system myself, or is it something that definitely needs professional attention?

Yeah, a pothole could definitely do it. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty acceleration sensor related to the active hood system. It's part of the crash detection system, designed to pop the hood in a collision to protect pedestrians. I wouldn't recommend messing with it yourself, as it's tied into the airbag system. Best bet is to get it checked out at a workshop.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was indeed a defective acceleration sensor. The repair cost me 315€. Hopefully, this thread will help others with the same problem.
