XC60 Exhaust Smell and Engine Light

I've got a 2012 Volvo XC60 with a gasoline engine, and I'm having some trouble. The check engine light keeps coming on. The engine seems to be running rough, and I've noticed a definite exhaust leak and a strong exhaust smell. Any ideas what could be causing this? It has 106582 km.

Sounds like you might have an exhaust treatment malfunction. I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 308. Engine light was on and there was a very strong exhaust smell. Have you checked the particulate filter?

Thanks for the reply! No, I haven't checked the particulate filter yet. Where exactly is that located, and is it something I can inspect myself, or is it best left to a professional?

On my Peugeot, the issues stemmed from a defective lambda sensor, which triggered the engine light and all the other symptoms. It's difficult to diagnose without proper tools. I would recommend taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis.
