XC60 Exhaust Smell and Engine Light
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Volvo XC60 owner experienced a check engine light, rough engine performance, and a strong exhaust smell, indicating a potential exhaust leak. The issue was suspected to be related to the exhaust treatment system, possibly involving the particulate filter or lambda sensor. After taking the vehicle to a workshop, it was confirmed that the lambda sensor was defective, and replacing it resolved the problem.

Thanks for the reply! No, I haven't checked the particulate filter yet. Where exactly is that located, and is it something I can inspect myself, or is it best left to a professional?

On my Peugeot, the issues stemmed from a defective lambda sensor, which triggered the engine light and all the other symptoms. It's difficult to diagnose without proper tools. I would recommend taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I took it to the shop, and you were right – it was the lambda sensor! The repair cost me 375€. All good now.

Sounds like you might have an exhaust treatment malfunction. I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 308. Engine light was on and there was a very strong exhaust smell. Have you checked the particulate filter?
