XC70 Diesel Engine Stalling

Hello. I have a 2009 Volvo XC70, diesel engine, with approximately 154,854 kilometers. Recently, the check engine light illuminated, and the engine occasionally stalls when idling. Also, I am experiencing reduced engine power. I suspect a faulty fuel pressure regulator, potentially triggered by an error entry when I replaced the fuel filter. Has anyone encountered something similar?

I had a similar experience with my XC70. Check for a pressure drop in the fuel rail. An engine misfire is also a good starting point. It might be a defective fuel pressure regulator causing the issue. Monitor your fuel efficiency too; a sudden decrease could indicate a problem within the fuel delivery system. It may sound silly but check the simple stuff too before digging in too deep.

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say "pressure drop", are you referring to the readings from the fuel pressure sensor? And regarding the fuel efficiency, how drastic of a change are we talking about to be considered indicative of a regulator issue?

Yes, I was referring to the fuel pressure sensor readings. A significant deviation from the specified values at idle and during acceleration would be telling. Regarding fuel efficiency, I noticed about a 15-20% decrease when my regulator started acting up. If you have access to diagnostic tools, monitor the fuel pump activity too. If you're not comfortable troubleshooting further, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to avoid potential complications with the high-pressure fuel system.

Thank you for the detailed insights. I appreciate the advice. I took it to a local shop, and it turned out to be exactly as suspected – the fuel pressure regulator. The error entry after the fuel filter change likely did trigger it. Got it replaced for 45€ and all is running smoothly again.
