XC70 Engine Stalls at Idle

I own a 2016 Volvo XC70 with a gasoline engine and 213490 km mileage. The check engine light is on, the engine stalls at idle, and an error is stored in the error memory, all pointing to incorrect fuel composition. Could a defective cable or plug connection be the only possible explanation for this?

Summary of the thread

The 2016 Volvo XC70 experiences engine stalling at idle, with a check engine light indicating incorrect fuel composition. While a defective cable or plug connection is considered a possible cause, other potential issues include a faulty oxygen sensor or degraded fuel quality. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be a defective plug connection, which was repaired.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

While a defective cable or plug connection is a plausible explanation, consider it similar to a kink in a garden hose – it restricts the flow, but the source of the water remains constant. Other factors can influence fuel mixture, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, which regulates the air-fuel ratio, or even degraded fuel quality causing incomplete combustion. Have you noticed any changes in fuel economy or engine knock recently?

You suggest there are other possible causes besides the cable. Could issues within the combustion chamber itself cause these specific symptoms, or is it more likely related to the fuel delivery system, as you implied?

While rare, issues within the combustion chamber can present symptoms, but given the error code and stalling specifically around idle, the fuel delivery system is the more probable culprit. Think of it like this: the chamber is the destination, and everything is fine during highway driving but the roads leading to it affect idle. Although you mentioned that it might be a defective cable or plug connection of the component, I recommend having a professional technician inspect the car to pinpoint the exact cause before any interventions.

Thank you for the clarification and advice. It turned out to be a defective plug connection, as I suspected. The repair cost 95€.
