XC70 Overheating Coolant Loss
Summary of the thread
The 2010 Volvo XC70 is experiencing engine overheating, a check engine light, and coolant leakage after driving, despite the coolant level appearing normal beforehand. Possible causes include head gasket issues or connectivity problems, such as a defective cable or plug connection affecting the car's data links (CAN bus). The suggested solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed by a professional, which ultimately revealed a defective cable or plug connection as the issue, resolved at a cost of 95€.

Right, no weird smells or smoke that I've noticed. I don't have a code reader, so no idea about the check engine light. It drives okay-ish, a bit sluggish maybe? What do you mean by 'connectivity issue'? Like a dodgy wire?

Yeah, could be a dodgy wire, or a failing control module. Modern cars rely on data links (CAN bus) to share information between different ECUs. If one module can't talk to another, things go haywire! Given the overheating AND the check engine light, and the coolant loss, it's probably more than just a wire. My bet would be on a defective cable or plug connection. Get it to a workshop, they’ll diagnose it properly. My indy Volvo specialist once had similar - turned out to be a corroded plug on the ABS module causing mayhem. Good luck!

Cheers! Took it to the garage, you were spot on about the dodgy connection! Cable or plug connection of the component was defective! Cost me 95€ to sort. Thanks for the help!

Sounds rough! Overheating and coolant loss together usually points to head gasket issues, but the check engine light could be a red herring. Any idea what code it's throwing? Have you noticed any weird smells or excessive smoke? Could be a connectivity issue too, like a bad CAN bus throwing everything off. Is the car driving normally, apart from the overheating?
