XC70 Overvoltage Issue

I'm experiencing an electrical issue with my 2015 Volvo XC70 diesel. At 196433 km, it's developed an overvoltage problem. Symptoms include numerous fault memory entries related to overvoltage, failures of various systems, and a weak battery when starting. I've also noticed some general electrical malfunctions. Could a heavily discharged or defective battery really be the root cause, or am I looking at a more complex circuit protection issue?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar overvoltage situation with my old Audi A6. It was driving me nuts! Did you check the voltage regulator? I’d bet my money on it. Do you have access to a multimeter and wiring diagrams?

Thanks for the quick reply! I do have a multimeter. Where exactly should I be probing with it, and what readings am I looking for on the voltage regulator?

Honestly, tracing it yourself might be a pain. I ended up taking my Audi to a shop to diagnose it properly. Save yourself some time and frustration and let professionals sort it out. Much easier than potentially frying something else.

You were right. After a thorough diagnostic at the workshop, it turned out to be the car battery. It was heavily discharged and defective, causing the overvoltage readings and system failures. New battery and fitting came to 290€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
