XC70 Rear Window Heating Issue

Alright, my beloved 2009 Volvo XC70 with the gasoline engine is throwing a fit. The rear window heating is completely dead. I'm seeing an error stored, and the windshield heating isn't performing as it should either - takes forever to defrost. Given that my battery is heavily discharged, could that be the root of this icy problem? Anyone encounter similar weirdness?

I had a similar experience with my old BMW 3 Series. Same symptoms, error codes popping up and the defroster acting up. Have you checked the voltage of your battery under load? A failing battery can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins.

Interesting… so you reckon a battery issue could cause the rear window heating to bail out entirely? Was yours completely dead too, or just weak?

In my case, the rear window heating was completely non-functional. The battery voltage was significantly lower than the rated voltage, especially under load. I recommend that you take your car to the workshop.

Cheers! You nailed it. Replaced the battery, and the heating coil is working again! Ended up costing me around 290€ with the diagnostics and a new battery.
