Thanks for the reply! I did have a quick look for air leaks, but nothing obvious jumped out. I haven't tried cleaning the throttle body yet; that's a good shout. Was your problem eventually traced back to the throttle valve or accelerator pedal?

In my case, after a lot of diagnostics, it turned out to be the throttle position sensor. The mechanic confirmed that the throttle valve was defective. Honestly, unless you have the right diagnostic tools, I would recommend taking it to a trusted workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause much quicker and easier.

Thanks, that's really helpful to know. I appreciate you sharing your experience! I took it to the workshop today. You were right, it was indeed the accelerator pedal module causing the issue. A new one, plus labor, came to 205€. Ouch, but at least it's sorted!

I understand your frustration. I had something similar happen with my Volvo XC90. Fuel consumption was terrible, and starting it felt like I was coaxing a stubborn mule. Have you checked for any air leaks in the intake system? Or perhaps cleaned the throttle body? Those were the first things my mechanic suggested.
