XC90 Hybrid Check Engine Light and Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Volvo XC90 diesel experienced a check engine light and significant power loss, resembling turbo lag, with increased fuel consumption. The issue was suspected to be related to a compressor surge or turbo-related problem. A suggestion was made to check the boost solenoid and vacuum lines, as these components regulate turbo boost. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a faulty vacuum switching valve, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

Boost solenoid, huh? I haven't checked that specifically. Where is it located, and how would I test it? What do you mean by 'boosting as normal'?

Yeah, the boost solenoid regulates the turbo boost. On the 3 series, it was near the turbo, but I'm not sure about the XC90. I mean, does it feel like the turbo is kicking in at all? Honestly, if you're not comfortable poking around, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. Could be a vacuum switching valve issue. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was a faulty vacuum switching valve. Cost me 140€ to get it replaced, but the car is running great again!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my BMW 3 series. Check engine light, power loss, the whole shebang. In my case, it ended up being a faulty boost solenoid. Have you checked the vacuum lines or any pressure drops in the intake manifold? Is it boosting as normal?
