XC90 Overheating Speed Sensor
Summary of the thread
The 2022 Volvo XC90 was experiencing engine overheating symptoms and a check engine light, suspected to be related to the radiator fan. The fan was not activating, and the coolant level was fine. A defective speed sensor was identified as the cause, preventing the fan from engaging. After consulting a certified Volvo technician, the speed sensor was replaced, resolving the issue.

The fan doesn't seem to be activating at all, regardless of engine temperature. No unusual sounds, and nothing's blocking the blades. Coolant level is fine. Could a faulty speed sensor really stop the fan from engaging, even when the engine's hot?

Okay, no fan, coolant's good, nothing blocking it... yeah, that speed sensor theory could be spot on. If the car doesn't 'know' how hot the engine is getting (thanks to a bad sensor), it won't tell the fan to turn on. Honestly, with a newer car like that and those symptoms, I'd get it scanned at a shop. Could be more going on than just a sensor, and you don't want to risk cooking your engine. I bet it'll be a quick fix for them!

I consulted a certified Volvo technician, and they confirmed a defective speed sensor. It's been replaced. The total repair cost was about 250€, thanks for the help.

Whoa, overheating and a check engine light on a '22 XC90? That bites! I've heard dodgy sensors can mess with the fan big time. Is the fan making any weird noises, or is it just not kicking on at all? Have you checked the coolant level, just in case? Maybe even peek at the fan blades to make sure nothing's blocking them? Could be a simple fix before it becomes a major headache.
