XC90 rough running and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Volvo XC90 was experiencing rough running, stalling, and jerking during acceleration, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggested a misfire, potentially caused by a faulty ignition coil. After checking cable and plug connections without finding visible issues, it was recommended to use an OBD2 scanner to identify specific error codes. The diagnosis confirmed a defective ignition coil, which was replaced, resolving the problem.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't see any visible damage like cracks on the coil pack. And yes, I have an OBD2 scanner. What information am I looking for?

The OBD2 scanner should give you a code starting with 'P030'. For example, P0301 means misfire on cylinder 1, P0302 means misfire on cylinder 2, and so on. P0300 indicates a random misfire, meaning it's not isolated to one cylinder. If you get a code like P0351, P0352 etc., that would indicate a primary or secondary circuit malfunction in the ignition coil itself. Given that you've checked the connections, and you're getting these symptoms, it's highly likely you have a defective ignition coil. I would suggest taking it to a workshop for further diagnosis and repair.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be a defective ignition coil indeed, as you suspected. The repair cost was 95€. Now, the car runs smoothly again.

Rough running, stalling, check engine light and jerking all point to misfires. A misfire is when one or more of your engine's cylinders isn't firing correctly. This can be caused by a faulty ignition coil, which is responsible for providing the spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. When the coil fails, combustion doesn't happen which leads to a misfire. You mentioned checking cable and plug connections, which is good. Did you check the coil pack itself for any cracks or damage? Also, do you have access to an OBD2 scanner to read the error code? That would pinpoint which cylinder is misfiring.
