I haven't changed it since I bought it. Could old oil really mess things up this badly? What exactly did yours do?

Yes, degraded oil can absolutely cause those problems. In my case, the transmission was hesitating between gears, and occasionally it would abruptly shift into a lower gear at highway speeds. I would highly recommend taking it to a workshop and having them inspect the transmission oil and the transmission itself.

Thanks. I took your advice and went to the workshop. Turns out you were spot on. The transmission oil was indeed worn out because of undervoltage. An oil replacement later, and it's shifting smoothly again. Total cost: 240€

I had similar issues with my XC90. Not sure about undervoltage specifically, but worn transmission oil can definitely cause those symptoms. Slipping, erratic shifting, and emergency mode are all signs. When was the last time you checked or changed the transmission oil?
