XRV transmission control unit issue

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my 2017 Honda XRV, gasoline engine. It has about 77k km on it. The car won't start sometimes, and the check engine light comes on. I also noticed that the gearbox sometimes slips, or shifts uncleanly. I read the error memory with a tool, and it stored an error. Could it be the parking position on the automatic transmission? Has anyone experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Honda XRV owner is experiencing intermittent starting issues, a check engine light, and rough gear shifting. The problem may be linked to a defective transmission control unit, which can cause the car to not recognize the Park position, leading to starting difficulties and a shift lock feeling. A similar case was resolved by replacing the faulty control unit, and the owner plans to proceed with this repair to address the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there. I had similar symptoms with my XRV. The engine wouldn't start intermittently, and I saw the check engine light too. The gear shifting was really rough sometimes. It turned out to be a defective control unit related to the transmission. Does it feel like the shift lock is engaged when it shouldn't be?

That's interesting. Yes, it does feel like the shift lock is engaged sometimes, making it difficult to move the gear shifter out of park. Is that a common problem? What exactly was defective with your control unit? Was it expensive to fix?

Yeah, the shift lock feeling is exactly what I experienced. It seems the faulty control unit prevents the car from recognizing that it's in Park, hence the starting issue. I'm not sure about the details of the defect itself, but I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get it checked out. They should be able to diagnose the problem and confirm if it's the same issue. I think you have the same problem, it's best to get an official check.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a local mechanic and they confirmed that it's a defective control unit, just like you said. They quoted me around 1000€ for the repair, so I'm going ahead with it. Hopefully, this resolves the issues. Thanks for your help!
